Spencer Johnson: Who Moved My Cheese? Audio Book Summary
Written in 1998, Who Moved My Cheese? is a book that provides people with the tools they need to effectively deal with change. The author, Dr. Spencer Johnson talks about what we can do to transform our attitudes towards change. This bestselling motivational is still relevant today.
This book is written in the style of a fable. Some people have described it as a business parable. The book talks about a pair of mice and a pair of human. Both pairs live inside of a maze. One day, their cheese is moved, and this causes a great deal of conflict.
The book uses the cheese as a metaphor for various changes that might occur in a person’s workplace or life. From there, each character represents a certain type of reaction that people have to change. The two mice, named Sniff and Scurry, and the two humans, Hem and Haw, all react to the loss of the cheese in different ways.
At the start of the book, the two groups pair off. The humans decide to travel together, and the mice decide to go their own way. When the mice find that there is no cheese at their station, they decide to leave the station behind and go out and look for new cheese together.
When the same thing happens to Hem and Haw, they react differently. Hem is angered by the lack of the cheese. Because he has always had access to plenty of cheese, he has become complacent. He doesn’t think of going out to look for more cheese; he is merely annoyed by his situation.
At the end of the day, both Hem and Haw go home hungry, feeling as though the situation is very unfair. They return the next day, and realize that there is still no cheese in place. At this point, Haw decides to start looking for new cheese. However, Hem is determined to remain in the situation that he is in, even if there is not any cheese for him.
In the meantime, the two mice have managed to find a new cheese station. They are able to get the cheese that they need. Hem and Haw are still starving, and Haw keeps pushing Hem to join him in his search for new cheese. Hem continues to refuse. Eventually, Haw leaves Hem behind.
Haw goes out to look for cheese, but is afraid of what awaits him. However, on his journey, he gains greater insight into why the cheese has vanished. He finds a few new pieces of cheese, and takes them back to Hem.
While the story in this book may seem a bit strange, the advice that it imparts is powerful. If people refuse to improve their lives, they will remain stuck in the same bad situation, just as Hem did. They will be completely dependent on others.
If you have a hard time with change, you will definitely want to examine this book. It’s written in an entertaining way, and contains a lot of powerful advice.
