It’s Important To Understand Where Your Decision-Making Comes From
It’s widely understood that most of the decision-making process in your brain originates it was called the prefrontal cortex, or in other words, just behind your forehead. So you might consider that to be the area where your self-control is located, including your attention span, behavior and judgment as well.
Throughout the day we have many thousands of small urges that surface and are quickly dismissed in order to keep us focused on our goals. An urge would be anything that quickly pops into your mind that you’d like to do in the next instance. An example would be turning on the TV, grabbing a bite to eat, taking a drink soda, or anything else that keeps you from staying on the path toward your goals.
However Focused You Start The Day, Small Urges Can Overwhelm
You may start out each day full of energy, with plenty of strong goals, and a lot of determination. Then, as the day wears on, all the tiny little urges tend to add up and eventually they’ll win out, and you’ll lose your focus. So in other words, you have a limited amount of willpower and once it gets used up you give in to the distractions.
It is as if you have a bucket full of tokens, each with the ability to keep your focus in the right direction for another 10 minutes. But when you run out of tokens, suddenly the daily stresses and distractions take over, and you’re done for the day. Hopefully, you’ll be able to start the next day with a brand-new bucket full of tokens and ready to go.
According to Kelly McGonigal, one of the best ways to maintain your willpower is cut out some of the stress so you don’t use the tokens in your imaginary bucket before you reach your goals. There is a constant battle going on in your mind between trying to take control of your actions.
By getting plenty of sleep, eating the right nutritious foods, and cutting back on your emotional stresses you can help defeat the distractions in your mind and thereby maintain your willpower throughout the day.
