Summary of The Great Gatsby Download

This classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel centers around the story of Nick Carraway, an enterprising Midwesterner from Minnesota, who moves to Long Island, NY to enter the bond business.

The novel focuses on Nick’s mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby, who is reclusive apart from the grand parties he throws every weekend.

Nick sticks out in this area, due to his gentired background and ivy league education (most of the West Egg residents are “new-money” with little established social status). Though the Great Gatsby audiobook chapter 1 begins with:

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

A representation of Nick’s inability to connect with his new environment. He quickly begins to form social bonds, thanks in part to his cousins Tom and Daisy Buchanan. Tom and Daisy present Nick to Jordan Baker, with whom he later begins to become romantically involved.

The meeting occurs in New York City, and leads to a confrontation between Tom and Gatsby. On the drive back to Long Island, Gatsby and Daisy are in the car together, and the car crashes and kills Tom’s lover, Myrtle, though it is later revealed that Daisy was driving the car, not Gatsby.

Nevertheless, Myrtle’s husband is out for revenge, and finds Gatsby at his mansion and shoots him. After the funeral, Nick returns to the midwest, and makes a number of conclusions about the recent events, which can easily be extended as an allegory for the state of the extravagant roaring 20s society and the corruption wealth brings.
