Summary of the Novel

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a classic American novel. Published in 1884 as a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the book was one of the first its kind, that is, a book written entirely in the American dialect, complete with local slang and mis-spellings to imply drawls or accents.

Set in rural pre-Civil War Mississippi delta region, the novel is told in first person, by none other than Huck Finn, the main character and best friend of Tom Sawyer. The book depicts a scathing account of Southern society and racism.

“You don’t know me, without you have read a book by the name of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” but that ain’t no matter.

Huck’s family is attempting to bring him up properly and “civilize” him, but he escapes to bander about with Tom and the other boys, until he runs into his Pap, a drunk, and is taken by him.

Pap brings Huck to a rural cabin in Illinois, on the banks of the MIssissippi, but Huck fakes his own death and escapes to Jackson Island, where he find Jim, a former slave who escaped to the free state of Illinois.

They wind up building a small raft, and setting off down the river.

After a number of incidents, including being separated by a steamship, needing to repair the raft and reunite, and meetings with vagabonds and other drifters, Jim is eventually captured and sold away.

Huck plays along in order to get closer to the family in hopes of freeing Jim, and soon learns that the eexpected nephew is actually Tom Sawyer. Huck finds Tom along the road before he reaches the farm, and the two keep up the fake appearances, claiming Tom is a half brother.

Huck finally learns that his drunken father, Pap, died several months ago, and then decides to return to his home in Missouri.
