stars_4 Pretty good. Listened to it with my 10 and 12 year olds on a drive up to my parents. Made the time pass quickly and they enjoyed it. Was worried it’d be too scary for Ben but was just perfect!

Ransom Riggs: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children Audio Book Summary

Written by Ransom Riggs in his debut work, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a blockbuster hit that skyrocketed to the top of young adult best-seller lists and is now released as a major motion picture featuring some of Hollywood’s greats.

ransom-riggs-audiobook-downloadThe novel was actually originally meant to be a compilation of pictures that the author had found and collected over the period of several years, but he eventually turned the photographs into inspiration for a storyline, and the photos are used as accompaniments to the work, and included with each chapter.

The novel targets children and young adults, and has been extremely successful within these markets. It quickly reached the New York Times best-seller list, perhaps the most acclaimed book list in the world, and stayed there for 70 weeks; the book also reached the #1 position on a number of different children’s and young adult novel tracking lists.

The novel follows the adventures of Jacob Portman, whose grandfather had previously lived in an orphanage when he was a young boy, run by a woman named Miss Peregrine. The grandfather tells Jacob a number of peculiar stories, and Jacob, unable to believe much of what his grandfather is saying and writing it off as fantasy, and perhaps even delusions, begins a journey to the orphanage, only to find that there are a number of mysterious happenings.

The home, which appears abandoned, is actually inhabited by a number of fantastical creatures not visible to the ordinary human, and Jacob slowly begins to unravel the truth behind the stories.

The peculiar children, it turns out, are not simply children who are awkward or reserved, as Jacob originally suspected, but actually possess an array of special powers, among them the ability to create time loops and alter events in the past and future.

Jacob also learns that his grandfather had a special power too, and was able to see a creature called a hollowgast, which is a humanoid being that has tentacles like an octopus, and are a threat to orphanages like the one run by Miss Peregrine.

Not only that, but Jacob soon finds out that he, too, has this special power, and that it is his responsibility to use that power to help save Miss Peregrine and the strange orphanage she runs.

This book is a wonderful tale of adventure and magic in a mysterious world that lives on the edge of our own. It’s success is clear proof of just how enjoyable it is for children and young adult, although it can be a bit scary at times for little ones, since it deals with a number of difficult themes, including death and ghost-like creatures that aren’t visible to the normal human eye.
