Elon Musk: Tesla, Space X, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future Audiobook
This book is often referred to as Muskís definitive biography. It is a very detailed look at him, his personality, and the difficulties that he overcame at various points in his career. Since it was published relatively recently, it is current in terms of its science, and it looks at things like green energy, and space flight.
While the science and technology that Musk works with is very important, Vance doesnít limit the book to just those subjects. The book also profiles some of the people that Musk worked with, highlighting the importance of a good team for the achievements that Musk has enjoyed. The book tells the story of Elon Musk simply and in a matter of fact way, and covers both his strong points and his flaws.
The story is well-told, including his darkest moments, after he burned through his $22m fortune from Zip2, and his $180m fortune from PayPal. Musk remained driven, and was willing to keep taking risks to achieve his goals.
Musk has been married three times, although two of those marriages were to the same woman. The book describes how he discarded one of his loyal assistants almost without warning, and how he filed for divorce, but his wife was unaware until her credit card was cancelled. He is stubborn, confrontational, and can be quite viscious when necessary ñ but the biography does not attack him for this. Rather, it highlights that in spite of these characteristics he was successful, because people will put up with a lot if they genuinely believe that they are working to change the world, instead of simply a part of another start-up that is copying others and making an empty attempt to be significant.
Musk was quite young when he decided that humans would not survive without looking beyond earth. He found himself with the goals of finding alternative sources of energy (to save earth) and colonise Mars (to allow the population to grow). His biography explores those two quests, and looks at how Musk decided that the worldís governments were not willing to aim so high, so it fell to him to take the lead. Vance is not a psycophant, he does not let Musk tell his own story ñbut he does show that he has pulled off many unlikely victories, and is one of the few people on the planet who could actually help us reach Mars for real.
