Malcolm Gladwell: Blink Audio Book Summary

The book Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is based on the power behind first impressions. He opens this book ìBlink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinkingî with a story about a Kouros which is a Greek statue that is ancient of a young person that arrived on the art-market and the Getty Museum in California who was just about to purchase the statue. The statue was almost 7 feet tall, magnificently preserved with an asking price of just below $10 million.

The museum conducted all the standard background checks to ensure that the piece was authentic. After fourteen months of thorough investigations the staff at the museum decided the piece was in fact genuine and decided to buy the statue. However, Frederico Zeri the art historian who went to view the statue decided instantly that the piece was in fact a fake. This followed by another historian who suggested the statue had the right form of classical statues but it lacked spirit. While the third historian felt an ìintuitive repulsionî as soon as he saw the statue.

This resulted into further investigations, which resulted in how this scheme un-raveled. It came about that this particular statue was sculptured by a few forgers in the early part of the 1980ís in Rome. The analysts who conducted the research over 14 months happened to be wrong and the historians that relied on the first impression and their hunches were indeed correct.

The author, states that in every human brain, there is a great backstage process that works its particular will subconsciously. This process allows individuals the method to perform sifting through large amounts of different information, isolate the telling details, blending data to arrive at a rapid and astonishing conclusion. This occurs in as short as 2 seconds of seeing or reading something and the book known as ìBlinkî is focused on these very first 2 seconds.

Blink is a book that quickly moves from one delightful story to the next related to the backstage process known as intuition. One of the stories involves John Gottman a psychologist who has worked with over 3,000 married couples since 1980 in a room known as the ìlove lab.î He conducts his work by videotaping conversations and reviewing under an hour of each tape, Gottman has predicted with an astounding accuracy of about 95% whether the couple in question will stay married 15 years into the future. The scientists in the lab that work for Gottman conclude whether a marriage can work after only watching 3 minutes of a newlywed conversation.

The book contains only 277 pages, but the reader can expect numbers of stories about this intuition. In a few of the stories, they are based on just regular individuals who make snap judgments while other stories involve experts who have been involved in many years of training.

Blink forms part of the wave of the books related to brain function that help readers to understand or learn more about the actions that go on inside their brains.
