stars_4 Very elegantly written. Nice discourse. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into when I downloaded it, and didn’t really think I’d listened to the whole thing, but I did. It kept me engaged through the entire 18 hours! A good listen!

stars_4-5 Spiritually inspiring! I found this book to be amazingly uplifting. From talking with others who have read it, some are profoundly inspired, while to others it was “just” an interesting story of a phenomenal woman. Either way, it’s a great book!

stars_3-5 I can’t really say that there was anything bad about this book, but it was just ok. It just didn’t grab me. Maybe you’ll like it better.

Paramahansa Yogananda: Autobiography of a Yogi Audio Book Summary

First published in 1946, Autobiography of a Yogi chronicles the life of Paramahansa Yogananda. As the title implied, the book was written by Yogananda himself.

At the start of the book Yogananda explains that he always knew that he would follow a mystic path. He says that he dreamed of being a devotee to God even when he was just a small child. Although he was an adventurous boy who sometimes got into trouble, he had great ambition for his future.

As a child, Yogananda went by the name of Mukunda Groh. He grew up in an upper-class family who also had strong spiritual values. His family was devoted to Lahiri Mahasaya, who was both a saint and a prophet. Mukunda dreamed of the days when he could go off and study in the Himalayas. His first priority was becoming closer to God.

audiobook autobiography of a yogi quoteOnce he was old enough, Mukunda went to study under Sri Yuketeswar. After he finished his schooling, he began to study Kriya Yoga. Eventually, he managed to become a swami, as well as a monk. This is when he was given the name of Yogananda. Later on, he is also given the title of Paramahansa.

After he became a monk, Yogananda worked to enrich the life of the people around him. One of the many things he did was open a school for boys. He also worked to spread Indian spiritual teachings in the west.

Eventually, Yogananda is able to be recognized as a saint and prophet himself. One of the primary principles of the people who followed him was the idea of self-realization. The fellowship that was created because of him is still in existence today.

Yogananda discusses his interactions with many real people in this book. These include people from India, like Jagadis Chandra Bose and Rabindinath Tagore, as well as people from the west, like Luther Burbank and Richard Wright. His conversations with many of these people are very interesting.

Yogananda’s book is written in a way that may strike some people as strange. Although the book is an autobiography, a number of the things that Yogananda describes with in it would be considered supernatural in nature by some. However, Yogananda makes it clear that this is what genuinely happened to him. His strong beliefs and convictions were what made his teachings so effective.

Because the book was written so long ago, modern readers have greater insight into the level of influence that Yogananda actually had. In modern times, you can go to cities all across the world and attend sessions that are based entirely on Yogananda’s teachings.

This book is an excellent read for anyone that is interested in Kriya Yoga or Indian spiritualism. It is packed full of personal information that can’t be found in other resources. Yogananda’s story is unusual and compelling from beginning to end. There’s no better way to gain insight into the world of a yogi than to read this book.
