George RR Martin: A Dance With Dragons Audio Book Summary
A Dance With Dragons continues the story told in A Feast for Crows. It includes the viewpoints of 18 different characters. Although some of these characters are new to the series, many of the featured characters were not seen in the previous title.
The book begins with a story from Varamyr Sixskins, a skinchanger who has lived north of the wall. From that point on, the book mainly focuses on major characters.
The forces of Stannis Baratheon are currently occupying the wall. Meanwhile, Jon Snow, who is now commanding the Night’s Watch, sends Sam Tarly and Gilly on a mission. Jon is also trying to negotiate a truce between the surviving wildings, allowing many of them to stay within the wall. This is seen as traitorous by many members of the Night’s Watch.
Jon receives a threatening letter from Ramsey Bolton. He also comes to believe that his sister, Arya Stark, has been forced to marry Bolton. He begins to plan a mission to attack and kill Bolton, and encourages the Night’s Watch to join him. Eventually, his own men turn against him and stab him, leaving him for dead.
Stannis leaves the wall to confront the Boltons. Although his army becomes trapped in the snow, he begins taking measures to protect the remaining men in his ranks.
Meanwhile, Tyrion Lannister is being smuggled out of King’s Landing. He becomes involved with a group of people who want to re-install the Targaryens on the Iron Throne. The group claims that Aegon Targaryen is still alive, and want to put him on the Iron Throne. They send him south to meet with Daenerys Targaryen.
However, during his travels, Tyrion is kidnapped by Jorah Mormont. He wants to bring Tyrion to Daenerys so that he can earn her approval once more. Although Tyrion and Jorah are kidnapped by slavers, they escape and head towards Mereen.
In Mereen, Daenerys is struggling to reign the conquered city. She is persuaded to enter into a political marriage, and re-opens the city’s fighting pits. Her dragon comes to the fits, and Daenerys leaves with him. Barristan Selmy rules over Mereen in her absence.
Meanwhile, in Braavos, Arya is training under the Faceless Men. They temporarily make her blind as part of her assassin training. When her story concludes, she is being sent to train under a new assassin.
In King’s Landing, Cersei confesses to some of the charges laid against her in the hopes of regaining her freedom. As punishment, she is stripped naked and forced to march through the city. For her other charges, she intends to face trial by combat. She has chosen a mysterious man named Sir Robert Strong to fight for her. Many suspect that he is actually Gregor Clegane resurrected.
The book ends with Varys murdering Pycelle and Kevan Lannister. He states that his plan was always to allow the Lannisters to destroy themselves so that the Targaryens would be able to take the throne once more.
