George RR Martin: A Clash Of Kings Audio Book Summary
A Clash of Kings is the second title in George R.R. Martin’s Song Of Ice and Fire series. The book continues the story told in A Game of Thrones. The story is told from the viewpoint of nine different characters.
Now that Robert Baratheon has died, there are three characters laying claim to the throne of Westeros. Roberts two brothers, Stannis and Renly, both declare themselves king. Robert’s son, Joffrey, currently sits on the Iron Throne.
Stannis partners with Melisandre of Asshai, who is also known as The Red Woman. She believes that Stannis is the reincarnation of her prophet, Azor Ahai, and that he is destined to sit on the throne. Renly is supported by the wealthy and influential Tyrell family.
Meanwhile, with the support of his people, Robb Stark declares himself the king of the North. Balon Greyjoy claims to be the king of the Iron Islands. This begins a war known as the War of the Five Kings.
The Starks meet with both Renly and Stannis to discuss forming an alliance against Joffrey Baratheon and the Lannister family. However, while Catelyn Stark is at Renly’s camp, a shadow creature, which was created by Melisandre, murders Renly. Both she and Brienne of Tarth are suspected of the crime. Renly’s supporters primarily support Stannis after this, but the Tyrells do not.
Sansa Stark is held as a hostage by the Lannister family. This prevents the Starks from making any bold moves against the Lannister. She is frequently tortured by Joffrey during this time. However, her betrothal to him is eventually set aside.
Tyrion Lannister begins to serve as the king’s hand. He works to gain the support of the Tyrells, which proves to be invaluable with Stannis’ army attacks King’s Landing. He also arranges for Cersei’s daughter, Myrcella, to be betrothed to Trystane Martell.
Theon Greyjoy is sent by Robb to negotiate with his father Balon Greyjoy. However, Theon is persuaded to turn against the Starks. He captures Winterfell and takes Robb’s young brothers, Bran and Rickon, captive. When the two escape, he murders two young peasant boys and claims that he has killed the young Starks.
Arya, having escaped King’s Landing in the previous books, travels with a group of young men headed towards the Night’s Watch. She disguises herself as a boy during this time. Her intention is to be reunited with her brother, Jon Snow. However, she is captured before she reaches her destination. She flees with a few other prisoners.
Jon Snow heads out on a scouting party with the Night’s Watch. After he is captured by Wildings, Snow is instructed to infiltrate them and learn their plans. He learns that an army of thirty thousand is planning to attack the wall.
Daenerys Targaryen heads to Qarth with her dragons and followers. Although she seeks counsel there, her life is eventually threatened. She is rescued by the men of Illyrio Mopatis, who want her to return to her old home in Pentos.
