The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is a classic work often considered one of the Great American Novels.
The work is a sequel to Twain’s earlier popular masterpiece, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This novel picks up where Sawyer left off, with the two boys having acquired a large sum of money.
The story then follows Huck Finn on a journey across the Mississippi River region, as he attempts first to escape his drunken father, and then sets out to free a slave named Jim.

The work takes place on Manor Farm, a working farm run by a drunk human. As the treatment of the animals worsens, the pigs rise up to power and start a revolution. Snowball and Napoleon, both pigs, lead the animals in the fight and take control of the farm.
Though the revolution starts out well, with all animals being declared equal, the new state quickly deterioates, as Napoleon takes a firmer hand, and more rigid control of the group.

The work centers on the stories of several fictitious titans of industry, including Dagny Taggart of the railroad industry and Hank Rearden, a steel magnate.
The novel tells the story of an America collapsing because it doesn’t encourage free capitalism and production, but instead chains those who seek to achieve the best they are capable of, with oppressive taxes and legislation.
The question “Who Is John Galt?” emerges, as one by one the industry leaders disappear from society.

The Catcher In The Rye
The book, written in a first person narrative, recounts the events of the last days of term and subsequent expulsion of Holden Caulfield, a teenager at boarding school. He tells the story of how he left school and went to New York City, where he spends several days meandering about and having awkward social encounters.
Though Caulfield portrays himself as somewhat brilliant, and the rest of the world stupid, it is clear that the boy has psychological issues, and he vaguely “gets sick” before returning to a different school 6 months later.
A Game of Thrones
The novel takes place in a fictitious medieval world, and has a number of different plot lines that are expertly woven together to create the series.
The main fronts occur in the Kingdom of Westeross, where a King’s death leads to war and battles for power, in The North, where the frontier of the kingdom faces threats from mythical white walkers, and The East, where a young heir of an old dynasty seeks to reclaim her family’s title to the throne, and (with the help of 3 dragons) conquers the eastern lands one by one.

The Grapes of Wrath
The novel begins in Oklahoma, during The Dust Bowl, and as the family loses work and land and is forced to migrate West to California, where they are told conditions are better.
When they arrive, they find that there is heavy competition from thousands of other families fleeing the harsh conditions of the Midwest, and struggle to find work and survive.

Pip is taken to a wealthy but eccentric dowager, Miss Havisham, who takes a liking to the boy and he falls in love with her niece. He later inherits a mysterious fortune and moves to London to be brought up as a gentleman.
The remainder of the novel focuses on the events in London, and questions arise as to the origin of Pip’s fortune, though he wrongly believes it was Miss Havisham. His love is married off to another gentleman. Pip then returns to his home.

The Great Gatsby
The novel takes place in the 1920s in an exclusive Long Island community. The famous Gatsby is an eccentric and wealthy man who is reclusive, except for the weekly extravagant parties he throws at his house.

The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, is one of the best-selling fantasy works of all time. It is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and tells the tale of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, as he accompanies a wizard and troop of dwarves on an adventure to recover the dwarves’ lost kingdom and rid their home of a powerful dragon.
Along the way they encounter other mythical creatures, including elves, trolls, and orcs, before reaching the gold-filled mountain home of the dwarves, and fighting the giant dragon Smaug.

The novel takes place on a fictitious island off the coast of Costa Rica, where scientists have discovered a method of extracting DNA from mosquito fossils and producing dinosaurs.
The island is intended to open as a luxury amusement park, but things go horribly wrong when a storm knocks the power out and many of the dinosaurs, including a T-Rex and herd of velociraptors, break loose.

The Lord of the Flies
The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, was written at the end of World War II. It tells the story of a group of British schoolchildren who were evacuated from the civilized world to escape a large war.
Their plane crashes, however, and the group of boys are stranded on a deserted island. The novel centers around the intricacies of human nature when presented with such a situation, as the boys face challenges in terms of coming to grips with the fact that there are no adults, learning to survive, and struggling with concepts of power, greed, and murder, as the fight among themselves to rule the island.

The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, is the best-selling fantasy book of all time. The novel is a trilogy, including the works: A Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.
The trilogy starts a few decades after The Hobbit ends. An aging Bilbo Baggins gifts the Ring to his nephew Frodo, who then sets off on a quest to Mordor to reach the fires of Mount Doom and destroy the ring.
Frodo is accompanied by a band of hobbits, elves, humans, dwarves, and Gandalf, the wizard, and the team confront a host of obstacles as Sauron and the dark powers attempt to take possession of the ring and large orc armies attack the civilized Middle Earth.

Of Mice and Men
George is a small but clever man, while Lennie is a veritable giant, but extremely dim-witted. The two start off in search of work on a farm, but soon get into trouble when Lennie accidentally kills one of the workers’ wife.
He runs off, but a hunting party sets out to find him, George guesses where he went and finds him first, comforting the big giant before having to make a terrible decision.

The work consists of 24 books, which tell the story of Odysseus’ journey home from the Trojan War. Odysseus, who wants nothing more to get back to his home and his wife, is blown horribly off course and delayed as he encounters one mythical obstacle after another, from Circe to the Cyclops, to Scylla and Charibdis.
He finally returns home after 10 years, only to find his house is filled with suitors for his wife, and he must prove himself worthy of her through a series of challenges.

The story, which is vaguely reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet or West Side Story, recounts the events that occur between two rival gangs one summer.
The lead character, Ponyboy, falls in love with the sister of one of his rivals. Tensions rise between the two groups and one member is killed accidentally in a scuffle.
